President Bush decided to have an opinion. Fair use excerpt from the Dutch newspaper nrc.

Brussels, Jan. 11. American President Bush should not interfere whether Turkey should join the European Union, German MEP Elmar Brok said.

“It would be just as wrong as that the EU demands that Puerto Rico should have the same rights as other American states. The United States clearly still doesn’t understand the European Union”, said Brok (Christian-Democrat), who monitors the EU expansion on behalf of the European parliament.

(…) Bush described Turkey as a bridge between Europe and the Muslim world. “I strongly believe that Europe has the advantage Turkey is a member of the European Union.”

Don’t get me wrong. I am a strong supporter of welcoming Turkey, even if there are still a lot of things wrong there; cooperation always works better than isolation. I am simply flabbergasted by Bush trying to tell the Europeans what to do with respect to bridging cultural and religious gaps. So far he’s being doing fine binding the Muslim world to the US right? Uhm….
